Functional Safety Project: Functional Safety of a Lane Assistance System
You’ll use the guidance from your lessons to construct part of a safety case for a lane departure warning feature. You’ll begin with the hazard analysis and risk assessment, and create further documentation for functional and technical safety concepts, and finally software and hardware requirements. Analyzing and documenting system safety is critical for autonomous vehicle development. These are skills that often only experienced automotive engineers possess!
Project Overview
In this project, you are going to create a report that documents the functional safety of a lane assistance system. Your submission will include:
- a Safety Plan
- a Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment
- a Functional Safety Concept
- a Technical Safety Concept
- and Software Requirements
You will not be expected to do an entire functional safety analysis from scratch; instead, you will use the lane assistance example given in the lecture to complete the documentation.
Steps to Complete the Project
- First, go to the github repository for the project. You will find all of the material you need to complete the project. The github repository contains further instructions, templates and the visual assets you need to complete the project.
- Follow the project instruments included in the github repo. Use the templates in combination with what you learned in the lessons to complete the documentation.
- Check your work against the project rubric.
Tools
You will need:
- word processing software such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs. Google Docs or Microsoft Word in the cloud are both free. Your word processor needs to be able to export to pdf files.
- spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel or Google Spreadsheet. Again Google Spreadsheet or Microsoft in the Cloud are free. Your spreadsheet software also needs to export to pdf files.
Optional:
We are providing system diagrams for you. If you decide to make your own system diagrams, you can use a free tool like draw.io.
Submitting the Project
- Once you've completed all of the documents, export the documents to pdf files. This will ensure that reviewers can evaluate your work.
- Check your work one last time against the project rubric.
- You can either submit the project as a github repo or as a zip file. You will turn in these pdf files.
